Scherenburg castle

The city’s landmark is the ruins of the Scherenburg castle, which towers high above Gemünden, about 50 meters above the confluence of the rivers Saale and Main.
From the 18th century, the Scherenburg was left to decay.
From the castle yard, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Old Town and the mountainous silhouette of eastern Spessart.

Scherenburg Festival

Since the 1990s, the Scherenburg Festival has been staged high above the Old Town of Gemünden. The court of the ruins of this mediaeval castle is the perfect stage for open-air performances.
